I would like to talk about a presentation contest I recently took part in. Last month,I was chosen to give a public speech in my school auditorium. I had never done any public speaking before. I stammered, and my mind just went blank every time I stood in front of a large crowd. I just got such terrible stage fright! Luckily, my teacher Jessica came to rescue me. She guided me on how to collect information from the Internet and how to write a good draft speech. Then, she videoed my performance. She also told me how to adjust my voice and facial expressions and urged me to practice a thousand times. All the effort paid off. Eventually, I gave a very good speech. It was a really important experience. Just as Jessica puts it, we always need to be confident of ourselves and work hard towards our goals.

I think that family members are the most important influence on young adults because of two reasons. First, we have been with our parents since we were born. They are the earliest role models for us. In a sense, we have been influenced by our parents genetically.Second, even if some people may say friends share similar life experiences with us, they also have limited life experience and wisdom, just like we do. So every time we get into trouble or face challenging situations in life, it is our parents who provide us with reliable solutions and unconditional love to help us move on.

The university plans to require that all of its business majors to complete one semester of work experience because, first, it will help the students to develop leadership and organizational skills and second, the relationships students establish with the company may help them to secure permanent employment. The woman disagrees with the plan. First, she mentions that her elder brothers had taken part in the program in the past. They just did some basic jobs like filing and typing, but nothing very meaningful. Second, a lot of other universities in the area have the same requirement. Even if this university follows suit, the kind of relationship the students develop with companies won’t give them any special advantage because a lot of other graduates also have a similar relationship with those companies. The competition is still there.

The establishing shot means an image shown briefly at the beginning of a movie, usually taken from far away, to provide context for the rest of the scene. The professor uses one of his viewing experiences to illustrate. At the beginning of a new movie he watched, an image appeared showing a big city with a lot of skyscrapers. All the signs and cars on the city streets looked old-fashioned, like in the 1940s. It was gloomy, wet and foggy. All these elements worked together to create a mysterious and dark feeling. Then when several detectives were shown talking in an office, the professor already knew that they were in a tall building in a big city during the 1940s and that the plot would be pretty mysterious and dark because of the establishing shot he saw at the beginning.

The woman’s problem is that she has to move out of her apartment right away due to a burst water pipe. At the same time, her mid-term exams are coming up. The first solution is to stay at her friends’ place and the second is to stay in a hotel near campus. I think the first solution is better. First, even though the hotel offers a weekly rate, it still costs a lot, and she has a really tight budget. But if she lives at her friends’ place, it is totally free. As for the distractions, she can go to study in the library in the daytime and come back to sleep at night.

The woman’s problem is that she has to move out of her apartment right away due to a burst water pipe. At the same time, her mid-term exams are coming up. The first solution is to stay at her friends’ place and the second is to stay in a hotel near campus. I think the second solution is better. First, she mentions there are already four people living at her friend’s place and she would have to sleep on the couch. She wouldn’t have a good rest there, which might affect her exams. Second, even though she has to pay for the hotel and her budget is tight, I think she can do some part-time jobs later on to cover the cost.

Task 06
Using points from the lecture, explain how the passion plant and the potato plant defend themselves against insects.

The professor talks about two ways plants defend themselves against being eaten by insects. The first is to use physical features, so that insects can’t land on them. For example, the passion plant has leaves with little spiky hairs sticking out all over them. The hairs are so numerous and dense that there is no room for insects to land. Since insects can’t land on the leaves, they can’t eat the plant. The second way is to use chemical defense. For instance, the potato plant can release a kind of chemical substance throughout its leaf system whenever insects start eating them. The insect swallows the chemical as it eats, and the chemical makes them feel full and no longer hungry so that the insect stops eating the plant.
